"Why We're Not Emergent" Authors Interviewed

Posted Mar 6, 01:11 AM | 13 comments | by Editor | Link

Darryl Dash has posted a 45-minute audio interview with the authors of the forthcoming book Why We’re Not Emergent (due out April 1 from Moody Press). In Darryl’s early book review, he praised this book, “I’ve always said that my emerging friends welcome critique when offered in the right way. I think this book qualifies. It may not change too many minds, but it may clarify some points of disagreement, and it may even lead to some discussion and correction.”

i’m not emergent either.

I am a pre-emergent. Before emergent was, I was.

I am a reformed emergent, or a reconciliationist.

Thanks for linking to this. I hope this book will succeed where others have failed – in at least stimulating real dialog. We’ll see.

yo i don’t think these guys aren’t critiquing emergent (village)™ or the emerging church.

they fail to recognize that the neither emerging church (nor the kingdom of god) is any of these: trendy, edgy, cool or relevant (another ™). or liberal. or conservative. that’s precisely the crap were critiquing as well! well that and pseudo-papal authority.

the agents of emergence actualize the priesthood of all believers (christianity largely pays lip service to this – just ask your senior pastor about his policies on nearly anything). that, and the kingdom of god is upside down from mans’ structure (hierarchy is a symptom of all religion).

ok, and were prolly post-rational/modern too. but its another issue altogether that the earth doesn’t sit squarely on the back of turtles. that argument is with a reality as we understand it going back for a hundred years: we each experience our own unique space-time thread – it is simply the nature of the universe to afford multiple points of view (twins, one on a spaceship…). and, everything we experience is built on quantum fuzz. and you want to be sure. you’ll want the blue pill…

learn what is emergence – and then you will understand what the emerging church is. and please stop confusing it with emergent™.

check scot mcknight’s what-is-the-emerging-church.pdf for more.

You may still think this after reading the book, but I thought they did a pretty good job.

I could be hopelessly naive, but (1) I think we should welcome the right type of critique and (2) this is better than many that I’ve read. As I say, I could be completely off though. Time will tell.

Wasn’t the term “postmodern” an art movement – the oxymoronic meaning more of a tongue-in-cheek than serious scholarly work? Because I’ve read, or tried to read, Foucault, Deleuze, Rorty, etc. I can safely say that Marshal Berman’s All That is Solid Melts into Air nailed what scholarly trappings the so-called “postmodern movement” had to the wall YEARS ago!

Just started the book. I think whether you are emergent, emerging, orthodox or whatever…you need to check it out. I’m not a five point Calvinist like these guys, but I’m also not Emergent. It’s a great read for anyone trying to really grasp all the differences.

I would just like to say in response to “P3T3RK3Y5”, that the problem is a person’s view of holy scripture. Saying that, “hierarchy is a symptom of religion” is just flat out wrong. Jesus Christ, who WAS from the beginning of the world, set up hierarchies of government to rule the earth. It’s necessary to keep order. If you are referring to roman catholocism hierarchy, i agree it’s crap and NOT from God or based on scripture at all. Does no one read and actually believe all of scripture anymore?? Who cares if we are in a post modern world! What people don’t realize is that different generations have had a different view of the world based SOLELY on the time in which they lived. I.E. During era’s where absolute truth was accepted widely, it was society that brought it about, Then came the enlightenment and everyone trusted in themselves. NONE of them was thinking for themselves. YOUR ENTIRE WORLDVIEW is POLLUTED BY WHAT SOCIETY HAS FED YOU concerning RELATIVISM. So you haven’t formed any opinion on your own, you are a PRODUCT of the time in which you live. If you would stop to realize that, you would emerge into REALITY and away from all these “postmodern conversations” that don’t lead to anywhere but deception. You don’t realize that Satan is guiding this whole thing…you can’t see it but it’s happening. You’ve been deceived. These authors are trying to rescue you from that deception. Listen to them. And study your bible it will lead to life.
