TIME on "Re-Judaizing Jesus"

Posted Mar 26, 01:18 AM | 1 comments | by Editor | Link

TIME magazine’s March 24 cover story “10 Ideas That Are Changing the World” includes some interesting articles:

In the last article (#10 in TIME’s list), David Van Biema replays the recent dust-up between Ben Witherington and Rob Bell over Witherington’s appraisal of Bell’s scholarship.

Van Biema’s conclusion: “Ideally, the reassessment should increase both Jewish-Christian amity and gospel clarity, things that won’t happen if regular Christians feel that in rediscovering Jesus the Jew, they have lost Christ.”

a good number of the folks in my faith community are connected with Liberty University (the late Jerry Falwell’s independent baptist and fundamentalist school)...so i get to hear a lot of what Liberty’s professors are saying about Rob Bell…which generally tends to be arrogant dismissal (jealousy?)

interestingly enough, many of the accusations against Bell’s scholarship could be aimed at Ray Vanderlaan (http://www.followtherabbi.com, but it seems as if (generally speaking) most of the naysayers save their vitriolic criticism for Bell…a fact I attribute to Ray’s close ties to conservative Focus on the Family.

just a thought.
