There's a Post-Charismatic Movement?
I kicked off what has turned out to be an interesting (and informative, for non-charismatic folks like myself) conversation about the charismatic movement, the post-charismatic movement, and Emergent. See my somewhat tongue-in-cheek post on “The New Charismatics?”
I called out John O’Hara from AGMergent, and he responded promptly with “Is AGMergent Toking the Jesus Bong?”
Andrew Jones was also quick to chime in, and he followed up today with an excellent wrap-up post of sorts. Andrew points out that Rob McAlpine (Robby Mac) has now published his book, aptly titled Post-Charismatic?
My friend Cyndi Clack has an in-depth post that discusses charismania, spiritual abuse, and Derren Brown’s “Instant Conversion Experiment,” which I’ve seen mentioned around the blogosphere in recent months.
A quick search in my RSS reader pulls up:
- an earlier post by Cyndi on “post-charismatic” that I think is also helpful.
- Jonathan Stegall describes himself as “post-charismatic” in his personal story on the AGMergent site.
- Jonny Baker may get credit for coining the term “post-charismatic” in the intro to Alternative Worship.
- Kester Brewin was blogging about being “post-charismatic” as far back as November 2005.

Glad to see more attention on this, Steve—we emergers are somewhat due for a conversation in pneumatology.
As background to “post-charismatic”, Jason Clark used the term in June 2005, independent of Rob McAlpine, who posted something on it in February 2005 when the book was already an ongoing project with that title. He published it online in February 2006, but removed the online version when the publishing deal took shape.
And to be historically fair and accurate, the term “post-charismatic” was used by J. Lee Grady in his 1993 book What Happened To The Fire?, and John Wimber used it in his book Power Evangelism back in 1985, although he was referring to a conversation from 1980.
The term may go back even further, for all I know!
wow – the earliest i heard it was 2001 (Gerald Coates). love that history rob!
Please note that a consortium of post-charismatic folk have now banded together and trademarked Post-Charismatic™. A PC™ logo is in the works. In the future, you are welcome to use post-charismatical, post-charismaticing and post-charismaticed (or post-charismaticked to aid in pronunciation). However, to avoid any confusion, we require that any use of Post-Charismatic™ include the trademark. Thank you.

From my perspective Post-Charismatic Village is a growing friendship, not a movement.
(Sorry Bill, I don’t know how to do the TM thingy.)
Thanks to you folks at emmergent village and several emergent authors I have been able to “hang in there” and not throw out all of my past faith experiences coming from a background of charismatic/prophetic confusion! Keep up the good work! May freedom of honest discussion and dialogue continue!
Sorry i’m new here. Is emergent a new denomination? My understanding is that it is not. Surely it incorporates traditional, catholic, charismatic and pentecostals (like myself)?

I am honored that you call me friend, Steve.
Wish the distance from Charlotte would shorten or that gas prices would plummet so I could afford to hang out with the cohort there.
Both would be miracles.
I am so glad to find others that consider themselves post-charismatic. Sometimes I have felt like traitor abandoning her roots. It’s nice to not be alone. Thanks for pointing in the directions who are delving into this topic.
