The Emerging Church Critique of Evangelicalism

Jon Berbaum has posted an excellent summary of the recent up/rooted event in Chicago featuring Scot McKnight, Wayne Johnson, and David Fitch on the topic: “The Emerging Church Critique of Evangelicalism.” Unfortunately there’s no podcast available of the talk, so these notes will have to suffice.

Julie Clawson has also posted some of her thoughts on the up/rooted event here and here.

Reflecting on the event, Jhimm Marks writes (in his poetic style), “The Event Last Night
at up/rooted.north
was a huge eye opener for me
on a handful of different fronts. ...
emergence is not all about neo-liberalism.
neither the liberal mainline, nor the traditional evangelical hold sway.
so far everyone is getting along while striving to a new common goal.
i think i’m going to like it, here. ...
my concern has been that my ideas would conflict with the movement’s.
i now realize that the movement is not a focused one,
but a broad spectrum of people
more concerned with putting Jesus into action
than in coming to some kind of consensus
about what the neo-orthodoxy should be.”

FYI — if you’re in the Chicago area, be sure to check out the next gathering this Thursday, September 27, entitled: “Missional: Has It Been Shrink-Wrapped Too?” featuring Spencer Burke, Neil Cole, Alan Hirsch, Denise VanEck, and Ron Martoia. This event will apparently be streamed online. More details on that coming soon …

UPDATE 9/25/2007: Watch the live webcast of “Missional: Has It Been Shrink-Wrapped Too?” via www.soularize.net/feedlive at 7 p.m. CST this Thursday (Sept. 27).
