The Cobalt Season
From Tony Jones, national coordinator of Emergent Village:
A couple of days ago on the phone, Brian McLaren said to me, “Have you heard the new CD by The Colbalt Season? It’s fantastic! I’ve been listening to it non-stop since I got back from Africa.” He’s right, it is fantastic. And many of us in Emergent Village will be all the more drawn to In Search of a Unified Theory because it musically expresses the hopeful future for which many of us are longing. So, I encourage you to read what Ryan wrote below, listen to their album, and invite them into your home when they swing through your town (you might even offer to change Paxton’s diapers …):
The last several years of our life have been quite a whirlwind. We stopped touring the evangelical “circuit” as a national “worship band,” planted a church, shut the doors on that church 2 years later, “lost” our faith, recorded an album of farewell songs to our old life, traveled around the States on a pilgrimage, got our faith back in a different sort of way, hiked the Alps, got pregnant, settled in San Francisco to be a part of a community, had a baby in the living room, and are settling in to the chaotic world of parenting.
When we took off a couple years ago to sojourn across the U.S., we were exhausted from several “failed” Kingdom experiments, and wondered how anyone could actually follow Jesus in any sustainable, authentic way. We sought direction and healing from our many friends through Emergent Village, and we received both in ways too numerous to count. As we shared our music and stories and art-and our very lives-we found great companionship within this community. It’s been a beautiful, messy journey of seeking the dreams of God for our world … and figuring out how we as God’s followers help to realize them. The friendships forged through Emergent Village have played a deeply formational role in our lives, and I can honestly say that Holly and I are alive and breathing today because of these relationships.
Of course, the journey continues, and we’re learning to constantly adapt and transition as we find ourselves living in this liminal space that we call The Cobalt Season—where the dawn isn’t quite upon us, but the dark of night seems to be behind us. As we move along the path, we try to leave some bread crumbs for others.
We have completed our latest musical offering (a plate of bread crumbs, if you will), a CD called In Search of a Unified Theory. It’s 12 tracks of hopeful longing … longing for a life of greater wholeness … longing for a world of greater wholeness, and of learning to live in a kind of calmed frustration. You can purchase the CD or download it here, and you can sample a couple of the songs live on Craig Burnett’s excellent podcast. We’ve also put some audio and video clips up on the website.
We’d like to think that this album has been birthed by the greater EV community: a culmination of the hopes, dreams, frustrations, fears, and insights of so many of you—of us—and we hope you’ll enjoy it.
As a way of reminding ourselves that the journey continues, we will be doing a short CA tour this week, followed by a national US tour in October and November. We’ll be back to playing house shows, pubs, churches, and cohorts. We would love to come out your way to share our story and song, so let us know if we can hook up. If we don’t connect in person, please be sure to keep up with us on the blog.
Cheers to the Kingdom Come,
Ryan and Holly (and Paxton) Sharp
