Proost: Creative Resources That Fuel Faith
By Becky Garrison:
In a world dominated by large record companies and publishers, UK emerging church pioneers Jonny Baker and Jon Birch, along with Canadian administrator Aad Vermeyden, dared to think outside the box. So, eleven years ago, they launched Proost UK as an outlet to nurture independent artists, musicians, authors, and other creatives.
During Greenbelt 2007, Proost UK held a major relaunch signifying their move to branch out from their music roots into publishing books, movies, and other resources that can be used for both group and individual reflection.
Among the music carried by Proost includes worship albums from COTA (Laudamus) and Ikon (Dubh). Their array of books and movies feature such Lenten-themed gems as Si Smith’s 40 book with illustrations and meditations by Chris Goan that profile Jesus’ journey into the wilderness and Jesus’ journey to the cross with Jon Birch’s manga style Twelve Stations animation. Those looking to see the fruits of a faith community who has been at the forefront of the international emerging church movement can peruse Grace, a collection of worship resources developed by Grace London, including Steve Collins’ poetry.
All tracks can be sampled via the media player available on the website. Also, people can listen to these full tracks available on Proost: “Space and Time” from Spirit of the New and “Archangel” from Harronell.
While emerging church leaders and other interested parties can peruse the site and order a la carte, the simplest way to take advantage of their vast array of material is a subscription. For a small annual fee of £60 (approximately $120), subscribers have access to all of the back catalogue as well as new downloadable content, which will be added each month. Jonny has setup a special code for friends of Emergent Village. Simply enter the coupon code PRSUEVILLAGE and you will receive a 10% discount!
Unknown 20-something poets, writers, illustrators, animators, filmmakers, music producers, fine artists, cartoonists, etc. looking for an outlet for their faithful expressions of their art can present Proost with their ideas under their Unusual Suspects program. Others interested in contributing content can contact Proost at info@proost.co.uk.
Those wishing to trace the history of Proost can check out Jonny’s timeline on his blog. Also, Jonny co-wrote with Doug Gay (forward by Sally Morganthaler) Alternative Worship available from Baker Books. In addition, Jonny, Peter Rollins (Ikon), and Karen Ward (COTA) were one of the 33 worship leaders interviewed in Rising from the Ashes: Rethinking Church.
