Mark Driscoll Kicks His Own Ass

Posted Jul 2, 08:23 AM | 11 comments | by Editor | Link

When The Wittenberg Door makes fun of Emergent, it clearly isn’t funny (wink). But when they make fun of Mark Driscoll, well … he’s not “Emergent,” so it’s OK to laugh … right?

Mark Driscoll Reaches New Spiritual Level, Kicks His Own Ass

Here’s a sample:

“At the Re:Ignite conference he talked about how Jesus and Peter didn’t wear matching sweatshirts that said ‘Best Buds’,” said John Kinston, a conference attendee who was live-blogging the event.

Kinston is emblematic of the many young pastors who support Driscoll. He planted Kiona Community Church three years ago in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. He attends 37 Mark Driscoll conferences each year, because he said he needs the support of fellow church planters and the inspiration of steroidal statistics.

“Numbers aren’t important, but we’ve grown 81.7% a year since our launch date and I still can’t get the guys to step up and be warriors,” said Kinston. “We want to love our city and we can’t do that with a bunch of pansies who would rather play video games than go to a monster truck rally or tattoo their faces like Mike Tyson. ...

Driscoll turned down our request for an interview, saying, “Interviews are for wimpy guys who wear Sans-a-Belt slacks and chew sugar-free gum.”

We love you, Mark. Honest. We do.

And we love this picture:

Thank you, Wittenberg Door, for your equal opportunity humor!

Is making fun of those who may disagree with the Emergent movement the best way to get your point across? It seems that for a movement that seeks to value the opinions of all, you sure don’t seem to value those who disagree with you.

rick, did you miss the links in the first sentence?

3Rick 07/04/2008 12:39 AM

David,
I don’t agree with either attacks here. My point for both is to grow up and handle this like people would who claim the name of Christ.

However, I find the Emergent group to be highly focused on using crass humor to handle their opposers.

Furthermore, the fact that the Emergent Village posted an attack on one of their opponents by another is an attack itself.

Hey Rick,

The Wittenberg Door has made fun of Emergent also—loads of times!—which was the point of the links in the first part. This is satire. Rather biting satire, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call these “attacks.” To assume that is to assume that the Door (and Emergent for that matter) is being oppositional.

I’m sorry for offending you with this post. I had a friend tell me that this post should’ve been marked “NSFW” (“Not Safe for Work”), so maybe I should’ve been a bit more sensitive about the language used in the article. I appreciate that kind of feedback.

I guess my assumption is that Mark Driscoll can probably take the joke, if he’s not laughing along himself with all of it (as we should hopefully be doing when the Door and others make fun of Emergent).

it’s house upon the sand.

Hey Rick—I’ve written some articles for the Door and I can honestly say that they don’t see articles like this as an attack. They like to exaggerate and poke fun as a way of holding up a mirror to the church (emergent, non-emergent, whatever). That’s why they’re ‘equal opportunity’ in the way they poke fun.

I just realized I’m defending the Door. They would no doubt make fun of me for this. :)

Obviously some people have nothing better to do than read EV blogs and find somethingthey can criticise. Too bad because mnethinks this is surely one of the reasons society at large laughs at the church. Honestly, we’re too many times sticks-in-the-mud, party-poopers, and walk around as if we have a broomstick up our backsides! Lighten up Rick.

Hmm… I agree with Rick. Obviously Pastor Mark hit a nerve and it clearly shows. Jesus would never do such a thing and to find “ass” posted is quite disappointing as well.

And why does the Emergent Village and its leaders proclaim homosexuals can be Christian when the Bible says otherwise? I don’t know what Bible some of the Emergent members read, but it certainly isn’t the one that’s God breathed and inspired. Saying such things is heresy. The least we can do is pray for the “Emergent Village” for God to reveal Himself to you all and open your eyes. Blind clearly leading the blind… ):

Scott,

Sorry you feel this way about Emergent Village. Fortunately, there are plenty of other Christian networks out there for you to find a home in. I wish you all the best.

Shalom,
Steve K.
