Internal Re-organization for Emergent Village
By Tim Hartman:
As we prepare for this weekend’s process of considering future directions for Emergent Village, it is important to allow for all options to be possible.
With the goal of a “fresh start”, the Emergent Village board is transitioning along with the other internal leadership structures that have existed. When Emergent Village first incorporated as a non-profit organization, Brian McLaren was the chair of the board, followed by Mark Oestreicher. A few weeks ago, I was asked to be the interim chair of the board for this transition period. Pam Wilhelms, Ivy Beckwith, and Brian McLaren remain on the board for the time being. The hope is that a new board (if needed) will arise after this weekend’s gathering in D.C. to steward the new directions which are envisioned.
Believing that form follows function, the old forms must be laid aside while new directions are discerned. Thus, the Emergent Coordinating Group, the National Cohorts Team, and all other groups and structures used to “run” Emergent Village—which have been largely inactive for quite a while—have been discontinued. This change is a continuation of the process which was started when the National Coordinator position was eliminated and only affects structures internal to Emergent Village. All of the various programs which Emergent Village is attached to: cohorts, partnerships with publishers and other outside organizations, will continue. There may be a time to review each of these, but that review would take place in light of this weekend’s conversations, not before.
A hearty thank you is due to Mark Oestreicher, Heather Kirk-Davidoff, and David Robertson for their years of service on the board. A special word of thanks goes out to the heart and soul of Emergent Village—all of you who serve the church that is emerging—whether is was in a “semi-official” capacity such as the Coordinating Group or the Cohorts Team or another role. Together we are working towards truth, beauty, and goodness together. I look forward to sharing the post-gathering update and continuing to share this friendship together.

Yes, thanks to everyone. I will be praying for the entire process this weekend and look forward to hearing about your hopes for the future.
Statis confessionis…
Caring for the Creator’s Planet
Making peace as the Way to peace (even when it includes sacrificial suffering)
Saying “no” to fraud economic systems that destroy planet
Saying “no” to military systems that promise peace and fail to deliver
Saying “yes to care for people you don’t really care for”
Might it be time to move from “conversation” to radical “confession”?
Tim
I’m delighted to see that you all finally have “direction”. Being a progressive means nothing without direction.
