Andrew Seely recently represented Emergent Village at a meeting of the National Council of Church’s Faith and Order Commission. Andrew blogs about it here and says that he’s been tasked with writing a paper for the Commission “from an Emergent Village perspective about the Authority of the Church in the World.”
He explains (in the comments), “Since Emergent Village doesn’t represent a church at all it makes it all the more difficult to try to understand an Emergent perspective on how the ‘church or Church’ functions in the world. Then there’s the question of authority. I would guess that Emergent sees this type of word as a modern convention, which in a sense excludes it from being used in an extensive way in a postmodern society. Hopefully I will be able to articulate a position that helps explain a perspective about where the church gets it’s authority (both perceived and actual) and how the world views and doesn’t view that percieved/actual authority.”

Though I know we all love to try and explain emergent, also I can imagine the difficulty. I don’t think I’d envy the job.
