9/11 and the Emerging Church
By Steve Knight:
I met Rev. Dr. Fred Burnham in April 2007, when a group of Emergent cohort members were invited to a conference on “American Christianity: Reinventing Itself,” sponsored by the Institute for Servant Leadership (ISL). Fred, I learned, was (and still is) Senior Fellow at ISL, the former director of Trinity Institute in New York City, and one of the speakers at the conference, along with Doug Pagitt, Phyllis Tickle, Sara Miles, and Michael Battle.
A group of us from three Carolina Emergent cohorts (Charlotte, Columbia, and Greensboro) converged on the conference and spoke on two panel discussions, explaining as best we could what this whole “cohort” thing was about—and what the broader “emerging church” was, as well.
Since that time, Fred and his wife, Regan, have been great friends of the Charlotte Emergent cohort, even driving two hours one way to participate in our gatherings whenever possible. Fred has shared his personal story of September 11, 2001, with us as a cohort, but I’m excited to share it with the broader Emergent Village community on this seventh anniversary of 9/11.
