JOIN THE CONVERSATION

The Emerging Women Group hopes to be a clearinghouse for the issues we face as women of faith.

In a changing world, a world that is flattening in large part because of the medium of the internet, women’s voices are ringing clearly as voices of reason, constancy, thoughtfulness and love. As a faith community, we have much to offer the world.

And as women, we have much to offer each other. The Women’s Group is only one of several here at the Emergent Village, and this site will provide many other outlets for men and women to write, link, converse. If you wish to participate in the Women’s Group or post articles or blogs to any topic on this site, you can submit them right here. We are also putting out a call for links to other women’s sites and blogs, which may receive permanent links.

SUBMIT YOUR WRITING

The women of the emergent movement have much to say! Are you one of them? We welcome you to write and participate in our conversations here and elsewhere on the web.

Click here to submit short articles on any topic. Here in the Women’s Group, we are currently seeking articles on how gender informs your faith journey, and the joys or trials you face along the way. Within this group we will explore all aspects of our faith and theology as time goes by, so please feel free to write as your heart dictates.

We wish the original content to be short, strong articles: 1,000 words or less. This is going to evolve as we develop an online presence that will provide more and more outlets for expression.

LINKS

We encourage you to continue to converse on our sister sites as well. At this time, we recommend the Emerging Women’s Regathering Blog. These events are planned throughout the year, and this blog helps to keep women informed: both of upcoming events and of the thoughts and discussions they take home from each event.

Submit your suggested women’s links here for now. You will be able to make your own links in time, and we will be launching a more comprehensive women’s area mid-fall. Please stay involved! Let your voice be heard!

I belong to Christians for Biblical Equality which publishes two periodicals, and gathers resources (mostly books) based on very good research and scholarship. I recomend them highly: www.cbeinternational.org

relocated to Sherman Oaks, CA. i’m in need of a solid home church….i like what i’ve read so far. where is the closest location to me?

6Kelly 01/07/2007 09:11 AM

Hello. I’m new here. I have recently become very interested in the EC and what it means. I am looking for a home church in or around Portland Oregon. I’ve just recently been divorced after 26 years of marriage. I’ve been surfing the web gathinering information and I like what I see so far. One concern I have is that some people relate the EC to New Ageism. I don’t see that as the case, however, I’m interested in hearing other opinions. Also, why do so many churches that consider themselves “emergent” seem to focus so much on young people and families? Where are the 40 somethings?!

7carol wimmer 04/06/2007 09:33 PM

I’m a 50 something and I’m wonering the same thing.

8jan 04/06/2007 09:43 PM

I’m 60 something and i have found it in Bethesda, MD and we are looking for a pastor.Check out the job ad.
PASTOR SEARCH: CHURCH IN BETHESDA

If you can:

-Deliver concise sermons that stir our souls and challenge us to think -Provide visionary leadership for an intergenerational, socially conscious, spiritually committed congregation -Show deep maturity, spiritual and practical, needed for blending a diverse group of people -Energize us, organize us, and get us focused -Help us develop an even greater heart for living the Kingdom of God and spreading Christ’s love to all we touch in our families, our community and the world -Bring innovative liturgical elements to our worship and yet respect and preserve elements of high importance to long time church members – Join in our emerging church inquiry – Reach out to the community and provide many different points where people can connect with us -Manage and evaluate a diverse staff If you are:
Determined, perceptive, insightful, optimistic, teachable, enthusiastic, search-centered rather that dogma-driven, able and willing to work in a co-pastor situation with a member of the opposite sex, if needed , a consensus builder and a fair team player And if you: -Own an i-pod, know who John Coltrane, Brian McLaren, and Marcus Borg are
-Have, at least, one time rooted for the Redskins
-Dare to hit the slopes with a 70 something year old man wearing a red leather tie,

Then: YOU MAY BE THE PASTOR GOD HAS READY FOR THE CHURCH IN BETHESDA.

Please go to our website: ChurchinBethesda.org , look under employement, fill out the questionnaire and e-mail the materials requested. We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I’m from northeastern Ohio and help to facilitate a small housechurch. I just found your sight and I’m just interested in what you have to offer. It all seems very enlightening. Our small group at times seems a bit fractured. The ones who started it, don’t come very much anymore. Finding a place and time to meet, where everyone can come is always a “challenge”. Are there others out there in the same boat? Also, we are a group of over 50’s (mostly) who have come from years in the institutional church and struggle with the adjustments in our thinking that God is calling us to. Some of us (including myself) find ourselves pendulum swinging, from the “go to church” mentality to the “be the church” mentality. So that’s where I’m at. Thanks for letting me vent.

10Michelle 08/30/2007 12:42 AM

I’ve just joined today. I live in northeast Florida. There are no cohorts here – just in the south. I do write, so I can submit something about my faith journey, and the joys or trials I face along the as a single mom who is also the daughter of ex Flower Children.

Ever since i have finished college i have been looking for a outlet like this. Our senior context seminar was based on postmodernism and the emergent church. Yea for giving women a voice in this movement!

I live near Indianapolis and have a great church, in fact there is a book group that just started about Brian McLarens book, A new kind of Christian. I love this book and I am thinking of starting a group of my own to discuss it, the one we go to now is 40 minutes away and I think something closer would be good. If anyone has any info for me I would be thankful.

13encantadora 02/12/2008 10:26 PM

Are there any groups or emerging churches north of Dallas, TX? They have so much to offer and I miss what I had before I moved here.

Hi to my dear sisters-in-Christ, I am a minister’s wife,60 years young, very involved, can’t get employment from ‘church’ so have gone into state run chaplaincy. To use my gifts for God, I’ve gone outside of the square, and I’m sure I’ll find joy in being at the coalface for these lost teens, atheistic teachers, etc. Prease pray for me Love to you all, Jesus is leading His church – emerging or ‘conservative’ doesn’t matter to Him. His love is on ‘those who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus’ Rev 12: 17 Rose AUSTRALIA

15eric 03/09/2008 12:25 PM

Dear Rose (14)
state run chaplaincies, albeit with a whole new set dysfunctionalities, are a lot more fun to minister in than the church, you couldn’t have fallen into something better. I pastor a church of incarcerated men and work day to day with prison officials and officers. I have never been surrouned by so many people who have never desired to spend any time in a church. It is a blast! Enjoy it!

I live in Indianapolis, IN and attend St. Luke’s UMC. I am part of a class reading
“Everything Must change” and I am being changed by it! I hope to learn more about the cohort group here in Indy and welcome contact from Nova.

19Daniela Dantas 08/06/2008 09:51 PM

hi my name is Daniela. I’m from Brasil and I’m new here.
So..I’m living in Manhattan now and I would like to know how can I find some emergent church here!thank you so much!

20Lydia Munoz 08/06/2008 10:39 PM

hi, my name is Lydia. I am a Puerto Rican living in Pennsylvania working as a mental health therapist and a part time youth coordinator for my annual conference. I have been reading little articles on the EC movement, but last night I finished Tony Jones book A New Kind of Christian. It was like I was finally at home. I hate the BS that sometimes floods my denomination and at the same time feel that at the core the theology is incredible but the process sucks! At any rate, I am a candidate for diaconal ministry and a graduate from Wesley Theological Seminary. I have a strong calling for at risk youth and their families and I have worked with minority youth for over 20 years particularly Latinos. I have a question. How do minority groups i.e. Latinos fair in EC churches? How would a poor undocumented person become a part of such a congregation? Do you think its too starbucks for that population or do you think it would work with them? Would really like to hear what you all think.

21Janna 08/28/2008 12:44 PM

I am a Reformed follower of Christ because I believe that God can and will do whatever He wants for He is God, and He answers to no one, especially those people who do not believe that Christ’s sacrifice on the beloved cross of Calvary was not enough, or for that matter, that God is incapable of forgiveness when He is on His holy throne right now, perfect and gave His life for those who now call Him imperfect and blaspheme His holiness by saying that He cannot forgive. Do you see that it is blasphemy to say that God cannot forgive? God is perfect, and forgiveness is righteous, so is God not righteous?? This position holds great judgement on yourselves if you hold to it! For God’s perfection is His essence! I beg you to search your heart, and ask the Lord to show your sin-sick soul the truth of His Word! LADIES, do not seek to find a “new” Christ, for the God of the Bible is your Creator, and His sacrifice is sufficient, and if you do not believe that, then you do not know the God of the Bible.

I am not sure if we’ve lost you or if anyone connected. But absolutely we need the the voices you mentioned/ minorities/latinos/undocumented to participate in the larger conversation…each perspective is priceless and helps us all grow closer to a full picture of The Gospel. You can start a convo on the message boards of theooze.com. You will find great diversity/dialogue and particpation there. Blessings on your journey too!

I’ve just left parish ministry after 15 years, and have left the Church for a while, too. After reading McLaren’s Generous Orthodoxy I begin to harbor a vague hope there is a place for me somewhere. I’m looking forward to more reading and sharing.

24MonarchAZ 12/15/2008 01:24 PM

I love reading all your posts…I see Jesus stirring hearts! May we all avoid our learned patterns of THEOLOGY & RELIGION to hear more clearly the voice of God. Less of our head, less of ourselves and more of His heart.

25Teresa Mills 12/16/2008 12:15 PM

I am happy to find this group. Yeterday I had a surreal experience. I asked my pastor what he knows about the emergent movement, expecting an intelligent dialogue or SOMETHING. What I received was a terse “I don’t know much. Just stay away from them. They don’t believe in truth.” I could have got an answer like that from a 10-year-old. I felt like that is how he is treating me. Anyway, thanks for giving some bread and meat to my spiritual diet.

26Erin B 12/27/2008 01:44 AM

I have been so encouraged and challendged by the Emergent Village podcast and conversation. I have been looking for a female teacher with a podcast to subscribe to. This has been a challenge. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

27shellie 07/12/2009 08:57 AM

What is going on here is idolatry. You cannot make a Jesus to your liking.Run!!

28Dani 07/20/2009 11:38 AM

I would love to find some Emergent Churches or groups that gather in person (as opposed to online) on a regular basis in Las Vegas. . .While communication through the internets is convenient, sometimes good old fashioned person-to-person meetings can’t be beat, especially when a person is new in town.

There seem to be so few Christians out there who understand and are willing to honestly listen to others of the Christian faith with emergent thoughts/leanings. Emergent groups are the only place I’ve found that I can typically feel at home among other Christians. If nothing else, I’m glad to have found a group of women right here who (at least for the most part) may understand where I’ve been and the conclusions I’ve come to in my journey of faith.

I am struggling with the organization church of today…

30Watchwoman 09/10/2009 03:02 AM

31Beth 09/10/2009 08:38 AM

Just checking in—the posts to this group seem a bit old. Is this group still active?

32JWyllie 02/25/2010 03:26 AM

Here is a thought, if you want to “hear the voice of God, read and learn the word of God instead of trying to invent or reinvent something that is what it is..Too many people refuse to hear or read the word of God…that should be the only concern, not about women or minorities, because Jesus is not going to be looking at your skin or your gender, just your faith. Stop twisting the gospel and live by it…

33Elizabeth Flores 03/29/2010 03:19 AM

I live in northwest Indiana and am looking for a group or cohort to connect with EC community.
