Akron/Canton Emergent Cohort

We are a gathering of people who are interested in the emergent conversation and who want to be a part of it in our local area.

This cohort meets on the 2nd Friday of each month at 8:00PM somewhere in the Belden Village Area of Canton – the location is announced on our blog.

Akron/Canton Emergent

  1. May cohort meeting
2035 State Road; follow the link for a Google map. Let's try meeting an hour earlier this week so that it will be easier to eat our evening meal there, so plan on being there at 7:00PM.

We will start by talking about dealing with anger, which we didn't get to talk about last time. If that conversation gets stale we'll just steer it on to other things. I hope to see you all there!

  • April cohort meeting
3430 S. Arlington Rd. in Akron (Green, actually). This is situated between Akron and Canton so it should be more fair to everyone as far as distance is concerned. Hopefully it won't be too busy, but it never has been whenever I've been there.

The topic is going to be a practical one: how should we think about and deal with anger? Rather than post a list of biblical passages on the subject like I did last month, I'll just ask each of you to come ready to discuss what you have learned from: 1) the Christian canon, 2) your Christian tradition, including particular churches that you've been a part of and maybe even your family, 3) any other tradition or field of knowledge, and 4) your own experience. What are the healthiest ways to think about and experience anger? Which ways call us toward responsible action without truncating the human experience or even denying to us our own humanity? Which ways are sustainable over the long term? Can abstractions be made or parallels be drawn that would be applicable to other human emotions?

Come ready to discuss and have a good time! I hope to see you there!

  • March meeting
(4926 Dressler Rd N. W., Canton, OH 44718) near Westfield Mall-Belden Village. Here's what we will discuss:

If reality is socially constructed, then is the church (or should the church be) constructing a new reality for itself and perhaps for others to some extent as well? If yes, then discuss how the concepts of new birth, kingdom of God, discipleship, and "becoming like a child" relate to this. What is the role of the church qua institution in shaping this reality? What, then, is the responsibility of its leaders in this regard? What is the responsibility of the layperson?

We'll be discussing the meanings of the following passages, and probably a few others.

Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again.” John 3:3 (TNIV)

He called a little child, whom he placed among them.  And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.  Therefore, whoever takes a humble place—becoming like this child—is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. Matthew 18:2-5 (TNIV)

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (TNIV)

I hope to see you there!
